On the job

The materials and settings of our daily work

These scenes show the equipment and spaces we spend our time in, from control rooms to outdoor stages. Each one reflects a step in planning, building or running a studio or live broadcast.

  1. Vision mixer and monitor wall

The gallery layout matters as much as the equipment. We position the vision mixer and monitors so the director sees every source clearly and can cut between them without hunting for a control.

  2. Pedestal camera on a news set

A steady pedestal camera gives bulletins a calm, consistent look. We set height, framing and cable slack in advance so the operator can move smoothly between presenters and graphics.

  3. Lighting rig above a news desk

Lamps are placed to give presenters even, flattering light and to keep the background separate from the desk. We plot every fixture so the same look can be recreated each day.

  4. Audio console during a live show

A mixing desk with clearly labelled channels helps the engineer react quickly. We keep speech microphones prominent in the mix and watch levels closely throughout the programme.

  5. Run sheet and cue briefing

Before going live, the team gathers in the gallery to talk through the running order. Cues, camera positions and contingencies are agreed so that everyone knows their part.

  6. Cameras covering a festival stage

Outdoor stages bring changing light and long cable runs. We position cameras for clean angles on performers, plan the feed route to the broadcast truck and test everything before the gates open.

Behind the scenes

Behind every finished broadcast sits a good deal of quiet preparation. The notes below describe the working habits we bring to each job, and they are the same whether the programme is a short bulletin or a long filmed concert.
